TALK WITH YOUR HORSE

Riding horses is the most fun you can have while still breathing. But it IS dangerous, mounted on an unpredictable animal. Anything can happen, and it will. So, you should never ride alone. Always have somebody to fetch help in an emergency. Of course there are drawbacks. Riding with somebody means there is a third party. So when I ride with company I warn them not to expect me to make conversation, unless urgent. I am “talking” with my horse, mind to mind. The instant I talk with somebody else, I can actually feel the horse lose interest in ME.

Mind to mind communication restores easily, however, although it is often hard for people to shift mind gears, perhaps even harder for the horse.

You need to work at it, like learning a new language. Here is an exercise. On the trail, fix your attention on a bush or rock, coming up. Hold that image in your mind, then turn to your horse and visualize sending it to HIS mind, without twisting your body. Success is when he looks where you looked, sans physical prompting. Make every ride an exercise! The more you do this the greater will become the communication between you and your horse, so you can dance in step.
